Friendship & Fruit
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” – (1 Corinthians 6:19 NASB)
The Holy Spirit comes and lives inside anyone who puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Scripture is clear on that truth. The Holy Spirit’s presence in a believer’s life is revealed by Christlike characteristics or “fruit”. The fruit of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (see Galatians 5:22-23). Only someone who has the Holy Spirit can display the fruit of the Spirit. It doesn’t make sense to expect someone who hasn’t put their faith in Jesus to display the fruit of the Spirit in their life.
Even though the Holy Spirit lives inside of you that doesn’t mean you are or will be perfect on this side of heaven. You won’t always show love or be loving. You won’t always have joy or patience or self-control. There will be moments when you act in your flesh and don’t display the fruit of the Spirit.
When two friends get into an argument and stop talking to each other their friendship is fractured. Until they reconcile with each other, their friendship is hindered. When we mess up and sin our relationship with God is fractured and until we repent our friendship with the Holy Spirit is hindered. You want a closer relationship with the Holy Spirit? Is there any sin in your life you need to confess to the Lord today? Do you long to have a close friendship with the Holy Spirit? Do you want the fruit of the Spirit to be more evident in your life? Then deal with your sin or whatever is hindering your fellowship with God (unforgiveness, anger, bitterness, etc…). How can you have a close relationship with someone you don’ talk with or spend time with? Get in God’s Word today, pray, listen for His voice, and be prepared to do what the Lord asks of you. Maybe you need to give up something or end a certain relationship. Whatever it is be ready. Be willing.
There’s no friendship like the Holy Spirit!
